Don’t Let Your Skin Infection Get Worse
What is a Skin Infection?
Are you experiencing a sudden, red, scaly patch on your skin? Do you have a lesion on the surface of your skin that has a pus-filled or watery core? If so, you may have a skin infection. Skin infections are among the most common conditions people must address.
A skin infection is a localized skin disease triggered when some microorganism interacts with your skin. This microorganism can be a bacterium, fungus, or virus. Skin infections can be superficial (on the surface of your skin) or deep (involving the underlying tissue).
What are Some Common Types of Skin Infections?
There are many types of skin infections. Some are better known than others. They include bacterial, fungal, and viral skin infections.
Bacterial
Cellulitis is a bacterial infection that affects the deep layers of the skin. The infection typically causes swelling and redness on the skin, as well as a burning sensation.
Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles on your scalp. It results in small, red bumps that may also itch.
Impetigo is a highly contagious skin infection that is caused by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus bacteria. The infection causes blisters on the skin that may rupture and form a honey-colored crust.
Viral
Herpes Simplex is a viral infection that causes blisters on the skin or mucous membranes. The blisters may break open and form sores that can spread and become very itchy.
Chickenpox is a contagious disease that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. The infection results in itchy red bumps on the skin that turn into blisters.
Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash. The rash usually appears on one side of the body and lasts for several weeks.
Fungal
Tinea Versicolor is a fungal infection that causes patches of skin to become lighter or darker. The infection is most common in people with a warm, moist environment such as the tropics.
Candida is a type of yeast that can cause a fungal infection typically found in the folds of the body. This type of infection is called candidiasis or yeast infection.
Diagnosis of Skin Infections
Skin infections may be diagnosed without imaging studies such as X-rays or CT scans. However, your doctor will examine your skin and take skin scrapings, biopsies, or samples of your growths to get a proper diagnosis.
Treatment of Skin Infections
If you have a skin infection, it is important to seek treatment. Left untreated, skin infections can worsen and lead to other health problems. Treatment options for your skin infections may include antifungals and antibiotics.
