Minimally Invasive Treatment for Pre Cancerous Growths!

What is Cryosurgery Used For?

Cryosurgery, sometimes referred to as cryotherapy, is a common dermatology procedure used to freeze and destroy tissue abnormalities.  It is a minimally invasive treatment involving extremely cold gas to freeze skin cells that then break apart as they thaw, resulting in the removal of the growth or lesion. Whether healthy or diseased, living tissue cannot withstand extremely cold temperatures. Cryosurgery is a localized treatment, meaning it is directed towards a specific problem area. While methods of cryosurgery procedures date back hundreds of years, Dr. Ray Allington introduced the use of liquid nitrogen in 1950 by applying it with cotton swabs. This technique is still used today, as well as application through a spraying device known as a cryogun. Cryosurgery procedures can be used to remove a multitude of benign skin conditions including actinic keratosis and warts.

Cryosurgery  can also be useful in treating the following medical conditions:

• Skin Tags
• Warts
• Skin lesions

Benefits of Cryosurgery

Minimal Risk: The risks associated with cryotherapy procedures are considered very low.  Blistering, scarring, pain, and infection are potential side effects.

Little Pre-or Post-Care Required:  External cryosurgery procedures are often performed in a physician’s office, and you can return home the same day.  Post-care typically involves cleaning the surgery site and bandaging to prevent infection as it heals.  The treated area typically heals in about 7-10 days.

Treatment is Localized: Doctors performing cryosurgery are able to focus the treatment on specific areas, protecting nearby healthy tissue.

Nominal Pain Associated: Patients have minimal pain or discomfort when undergoing cryosurgery treatments.  Often it feels as if they have an ice cube on their skin.  Pain after the procedure can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Little to No Downtime: Patients are often able to return to usual activities quickly.

What Should You Expect?

Prior to an external cryosurgery procedure, a physician will explain why they are performing the procedure (i.e., removing a skin tag) and offer any alternative procedures for you to choose from. If you have chosen to proceed with cryosurgery, the doctor will cleanse the designated area so that it is free from all lotions, make-up, or other substances. Depending on the location or severity of the skin condition, the doctor may apply a local anesthetic to minimize any associated discomfort. The liquid nitrogen is then applied via a cotton swab or cryogun. If additional applications are required, the physician will wait for the area to thaw before beginning the next round. Once complete, the surgery site may become swollen, sore, and red. A blister will appear, and new skin will begin to form underneath the lesion. It is important not to break open the blister. The physician will give instructions on how to care for the surgery site. This will likely include keeping the area clean, applying antibacterial ointment, and covering with a bandage. Avoid using any scented lotions soaps, or makeup until the area has completely healed. While there is a low risk for scarring, you may notice pink or red skin for a few months following the procedure. Remember to cover the area with a minimum of SPF30 to help prevent further damage. Call to schedule a follow-up appointment if you experience any unusual symptoms such as fever (over 100.4F), chills, increasing pain, green or yellow oozing, a bad smell, or bleeding that does not stop with applied pressure. Feel free to call the office with any questions or concerns that arise.
